How to Pack Framed Pictures and Art For Moving?

No matter how large or tiny your home is, one room always seems to give you the most trouble when moving. For some, it’s the kitchen with all those pesky pots and pans. For others, it’s the living room with its fragile end tables and overstuffed couch. But for many of us, the most challenging room to pack up and move is the one with all our precious photos and artwork.

Packing picture frames and artwork can be daunting, as some artworks are considered heavy objects. But with a bit of preparation and the right supplies, it can be a breeze. So before you throw everything into boxes haphazardly, take a deep breath and follow these simple tips for packing your framed pictures and artwork like a pro.

Gather your packing materials

Packing picture frames and artwork is a delicate task that requires some preparation. Before you start, ensure to acquire all the suitable packing materials. You’ll need:

– Boxes: Depending on the size and number of framed pictures and artwork, you may need multiple boxes like a mirror box and others. It’s better to err on caution and have too many boxes than not enough.

– Packing paper: This will fill any space in the boxes and protect your pictures and artwork from getting scratched or damaged.

– Bubble wrap: This is key for protecting your framed pictures and artwork during the move. Be generous with it to make sure everything is well-protected.

– Packing peanuts: These can be used instead of packing paper to fill any space in the boxes. Remember not to use too many as they can be difficult to remove later.

– Packing Tape: You’ll need good quality tape to seal the boxes and secure everything.

– Marker: This will label the boxes so you know what’s inside.

Gather supplies needed so the packing process can be done more efficiently. Other packing supplies include mirror boxes, specialty boxes, picture boxes, cardboard boxes, and more! You can buy it all at any local hardware or moving store.

Steps for Packing picture frames and artwork

Picture frames and artwork are some of the most delicate items in your home, so it’s essential to take extra caution when packing them up for a move. When done right, packing picture frames and artwork is an easy process that anyone can do.

It would be best to organize and have steps to follow to achieve your goal, which is to move your stuff without any damage. Here are a few tips to help you get started:

Set up your packing station

Before you start packing, setting up a dedicated packing station is essential. This can be any flat surface in your home where you have enough room to spread out all of your supplies. Once your packing station is set up, lay out all your materials.

Setting up your packing station ahead will save you time and frustration later.

Creating a dedicated packing station will help keep the process organized. This is important because it will make packing everything much easier and less chaotic. Plus, it’s always helpful to have all your supplies in one place, so you don’t have to go running for them whenever you need something.

Get all your picture frames and arts

Gather all of your framed pictures and artwork from around your home. This includes anything hanging on your walls and any smaller items on shelves or tables. If possible, try to group items that are similar in size and shape.

If you have a lot of framed pictures and artwork, it’s helpful to sort them into piles before you start packing. This way, you can pack each box according to size, making the process much smoother.

Match the Artwork With Appropriately Sized Boxes

Once you have gathered all your pictures and artwork, it’s time to match them up with appropriately sized boxes. If you have large pieces, such as paintings or mirrors, you may need to find specialty boxes specifically designed for these items. For smaller framed pictures, you can use regular cardboard boxes.

If you’re experiencing difficulty finding the right size boxes, you can always cut down larger boxes to fit your needs. Just reinforce the bottom of the box with packing tape, so it doesn’t fall apart when you start filling it up.

Tape an X over the glass to secure the frame

The next step is to secure the frame by taping an “X” over the glass. This will help hold the glass in place, absorb shock and prevent it from breaking during the move. Be sure to use good-quality packing tape, so it doesn’t come loose later.

If you’re worried about the tape ruining the look of your frames, you can always remove it after you’ve unpacked everything at your new home.

When packing framed pictures and artwork, it’s essential to use good-quality packing tape. This will help secure the frame and prevent the glass from breaking during the move.

Wrap each framed picture and art separately

Once you’ve secured the frame, it’s time to start wrapping each piece individually. If you have many small items, you may want to wrap them all together in one large sheet of packing paper. For larger items, such as paintings and mirrors, you should wrap each item separately.

Be sure to use a good amount of packing paper or bubble wrap to protect your items from getting damaged during the move. Also, tape the wrapping paper, so it doesn’t come loose later.

If the artwork does not have a glass face, cover it

If the artwork does not have a glass face, you’ll need to cover it with packing paper to protect it from getting damaged. Tape the packing paper in place, so it doesn’t move around during the move.

For extra protection, you can also wrap the packing paper in bubble wrap before taping it. Just be sure to use a good amount of bubble wrap to ensure safety.

Secure artwork with plastic wrap or commercial palette wrap

Once you’ve packed everything into the box, it’s time to secure it with plastic or commercial palette wrap. This will hold everything in place and prevent it from shifting around during the move.

If you’re using plastic wrap, always use a reasonable amount so it doesn’t come loose later. And if you’re using commercial palette wrap, follow the manufacturer’s instructions, so you don’t damage your artwork.

A flat picture box can keep framed artwork secure

If you have a lot of framed artwork, you may want to invest in some flat picture boxes. These are designed to hold framed pictures and artwork; they’re a great way to keep everything organized during the move.

You can avoid shattered glass or any damage if you ensure each piece of artwork snugly fits into its box. And for extra protection, you can use corner protectors for each framed art. You don’t want anything to be able to move around too much, as this could cause the frame to become damaged.

If you have any space in the box, you can fill it with packing paper or peanuts. Please don’t use too many; they can be hard to remove later.

Box the wrapped framed pictures

Once you’ve correctly wrapped and secured each piece of artwork, you can start to pack picture frames into cardboard boxes or any box you’d like. As you pack pictures, check each piece to see if they are protected enough to fit correctly into the box.

If you have many small items, you may want to use one large box. For slightly larger items, such as paintings and mirrors, you should use the right boxes, so they don’t become too heavy to lift. However you want it packed, be sure that everything snugly fits into the box and that there is no space.

Seal and label the box

Now that everything is packed up and ready to go, it’s time to seal the box. Use good quality packing tape, so the moving box doesn’t come open during the move, and as you tape the box closed, be sure to check each side of the box or its edges for any openings or holes. Be sure to use the markers or sharpies to label the box with “Fragile” or “Handle With Care” so the professional movers know to take extra care when moving it.

Positioned the boxes inside the truck

If everything is boxed individually, sealed, and labeled, it’s time to load up the moving truck. Be sure to put the boxes with the framed pictures and art on top of other boxes and furniture so they won’t get squished or damaged. You can use blankets or towels to help keep them in place, and if you have any extra space, you can use that to fill it in with more packing paper or peanuts.
